Wisdom teeth

Wisdom tooth or molar number 3 is the last tooth to appear in the mouth. It starts erupting from the age of 18 but often remains included. In this situation can become infected and cause very strong infections in the oro-maxillo-facial area. When it erupts, often when an adjacent molar is missing, develops dental cavities quickly. The enamel of this molar is very thin and of poor quality. Another reason why is quickly caries is its distal position that makes brushing difficult and often superficial.

What complications can the included or semi-included wisdom teeth cause ?

  • Occlusal disharmonies made by pushing the nearby teeth in its attempt to erupt.
  • Pain in the nearby and the antagonist teeth.
  • Often the pain radiates to the ear, eye, neck, upper jaw etc.
  • Chronic infection of the molar area coverage.
  • Resorption of the nearby tooth root in its attempt to erupt; due to the lack of space, the wisdom tooth penetrates the root of the nearby tooth.
  • Often causes acute repeated pericoronarite, until extraction.

Often the molar tooth is a problematic tooth and its extraction is indicated even in the absence of painful symptoms.

Extraction of wisdom teeth is not a general rule and each case must be examined.

Why recommend the extraction of the third molar :

  • Often those molars remain included and affect the number 2 molars, which are extremely important teeth.
  • Have a bad enamel quality and develop dental caries easy.
  • Have a very peculiar morphology can hardly be treated endodontically.
  • It sanitizes with difficulty because is placed in the back.
  • In some cases where it is included, the nearby molar is compromised also and must be extracted as well.
  • The included wisdom molar can become cystic and rarely can develop a tumor.

The extraction of wisdom teeth is painful ?

  • “Does it hurt?” – Is the question asked by each patient who needs the extraction of his wisdom tooth. The answer is NO! In our clinic we have specialists in oral-maxillofacial surgery, specialized in painless extraction of wisdom teeth.
  • The extraction starts with anesthesia, using atraumatic needle and a powerful anesthetic to numb the place.
  • During surgery the discomfort is created by the procedure itself but the patient does not feel pain.
  • In difficult cases the patient may tumefy after extraction in the respective area, but the swelling will disappear after 48 h
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain release pills are recommended after extraction.
